What is general and specific deterrence?

General deterrence aims to prevent the public at large from committing crimes by instilling fear of punishment, thereby promoting adherence to laws. Specific deterrence, on the other hand, focuses on discouraging the individual offender from reoffending by imposing consequences that they personally experience.
