How do you get on a chocobo in Final Fantasy 13?

Near the begginning of chapter two there is a battle at the begginning of which you can choose to ignore the chocobo or rescue him, if you rescue him he will become a part of your party and you will receive chocobo eggs for the rest of the game unless you remove all chocobos from your party.
