When did area code 718 come into existence?

Area code 718 was created in 1984. In the original split, Brooklyn, Queens, and Staten Island switched to 718 while Manhattan and the Bronx kept 212. In 1992, the Bronx was also moved to 718.

Manhattan now has area codes 212 and 646. The other four boroughs have area codes 718, 347, and 929. Area code 917 serves all five boroughs.
