Solar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes between the Sun and the Earth, and Moon covers the Sun, thus obscuring it's rays, as viewed from the Earth.

Actually, total solar eclipses (when the sun is completely obscured by the moon) are rare, but up to 5 partial eclipses of the Sun happen each year.
