Why was the moldboard plow invented?

The moldboard plow was invented so that when the field was plowed, the soil would flip over so that the rich soil underneath was showing. This helped farmers plant more efficient crops and as a result there was a major population growth. They literally took a plow and put a board on the side, and it worked!
