The oldest player to play was Salvador Reyes. He played at the age of 71 with Chivas of Mexico against Pumas of Mexico on January19 2008. He played for the first minute of the game touching the ball 5 times. He got substituted after all of that.

As for the United States or anywhere other than Europe I am unsure. This is for Europe. The official record is held by John Ryan the owner of Doncaster Rovers. He brought himself on as substitute in the last minute of a game in 2003 aged 52 years, 11 months. If this counts because he did not touch the ball otherwise New Brighton goalkeeper Neil McBain is the man your looking for. He played away at Hartlepool in a Division 3 North game in March 1947 aged 51 years, 4 months.

At the age of 58, Pedro Ribeiro Lima, the oldest professional player in activity, scored the first goal of his career. This could not have happened anywhere else than in Brazil, and its glorious state championships.

Pedro plays for A.D. Perilima, the worst club of Paraibano championship and scored from the penalty spot when Campinense had a 4 - 0 advantage in the score board. When the referee signalized the foul, his teammates had no doubt: Pedro had to take it. The fans celebrated the achievement as a title, and greeted Pedro as top star.

Despite the final score of 5 - 1, Pedro was very happy about it, and said that Romário's search for the 1000th goal inspired him. Perilima was founded in 1992 and Pedro started playing in 1999. He says that his strength comes from a diet of "sordas," a type of "cookie" made out of rapadura, the delicious sweet typical from Brazil's Northeast.

In Japan there are two elder players: Masashi "GON" Nakayama who plays for Jubilo Iwata in the Japanese first division and Kazuyoshi "KAZU" Miura who plays for Yokohama FC in the Japanese second division. Both are 42 years old.

Sir Stanley Matthews was an English footballer, known as The Wizard of the Dribble and The Magician. He kept fit enough to play at the top level until he was 50 years old, the oldest player ever to play in England's top football division and the oldest player ever to represent the country. He played his final competitive game in 1985, at the age of 70, in Brazil, damaging his cartilage.
