What is the hank of yarn?

A hank of yarn is a ring of yarn. This ring is generally then twisted on itself, and one end pulled through the opposite end, to create a shape like a braid.

From a hank, you would generally roll a ball of yarn so that it is easier for you to use without the hank getting all tangled and pulled taut or out of shape.
