1) in the countryside it led to many peasant farmers losing their land. The majority of slaves were bought by the owners of large landed estates to work in their fields. It supply of labour enabled the big states to expand at the expense of struggling small farmers. Many migrated to Rome to eke out a living there, swelling the masses of the urban poor.

2) In the city unemployment and underemployment were a big problems. There were two main reasons for this. One was that Rome was more of a consumption than a production city. The others was that the households of the rich had plenty of slaves and did not need to employ workers.
