It won't help cure the cold but it can help in small amounts with a cough and help you rest. Most night time cough medicines contain alcohol for cough suppression, to relax achy muscles, and as a sleep aid. However, alcohol is a diuretic and, unless used in portions of one ounce or less or no more frequently than every 4 - 6 hours, alcohol could do more damage than good when you are ill with an infectious disease.
Many people drink a hot toddy when ill with a cold to treat a cough and to rest better. These are usually made with a half ounce to one ounce of whiskey in a cup of hot water, sometimes with lemon or other ingredients (such as herbs) added for flavor or other properties of those added herbal ingredients.
Remember: All things in moderation.
