Why are sheep tagged?

Tagging of animals is done for two main purposes: estimation of population, tracking migration patterns.

To estimate population you count the number of tagged animals later found in a sample, statistical formula are then used to compute the estimate of total population.

To track migration patterns the tag usually must have a GPS receiver in it and a data storage mechanism of some type that can be read later (either directly or remotely).
