What is over travel protection?

Over-travel refers to the mechanical distance beyond where something is intended to be useful. Some devices use "limit switches" to stop the driver before the moved object exceeds the useful limit and enters "over-travel". Other devices use mechanical stops and rely upon some other means to detect the condition and avoid overload.
