I remember the title of the story - I used to drive my father potty with it by asking my dad to read it to me as a bedtime story EVERY night! It came out of a book of other stories, maybe an anthology, but I haven't a clue who wrote it. I think I recall that the little man in question made his appearance from a chimney, had a beard and smoked an old-fashioned clay pipe which he lit with a coal from the fire (there was a black and white line illustration). My memory of these facts may be inaccurate or distorted by time - I must have been all of three or four at the time - but I would love to get my hands on a copy of that book to try and discover what I found so fascinating and compelling about that tale.
