What does a ribbon symbolize?

A ribbon unto itself means nothing other than being a feminine accessory to have on your skin. But then if the ribbon is a specific color, say yellow, pink or red, then it has a specific meaning in regards to what it is meant to symbolize be it to support our troops, breast cancer, AIDS awareness, etc.
