Sometimes there are hatches of different insects and you need to copy them artificially as best you can. For lakes you can use leaches (most of us don't like them), flies or certain small spoons (silver/gold/black with silver dots.) While fishing stores make big bucks off guys who like fishing I've fished since I was 9 years old and caught 2 Coho (live in Canada) with one of my silver earrings. LOL You can also use worms in some lakes. Our oceans some fish like small herring and you can generally buy them at the docks.
