The first real colonizer of California in the late 1700s was Spanish explorer Gaspar de Portolá. He led an expedition in 1769 that marked the beginning of Spanish colonization in the region. This expedition was accompanied by Franciscan missionaries, including Junípero Serra, who established the first California mission in San Diego. Their efforts laid the foundation for further Spanish settlement and the development of California.
