I'm not completely sure but I have been told (and read of) it possibly being a slight rotator cuff pull or tear, something that weightlifters get. I lift weights and have the same sensation you describe, a popping in the shoulder joint with no pain at all...only thing is, it's getting worse. I am now a bit concerned about this and although I'm told it's fine I'll be making an appointment with the doctor asap. Like i said, Rotator Cuff damage is the most common.
Most people i talk to, read about can sort these mild symptoms with normal stretching etc but, of course everyone is different, my advice would be if in doubt, get it checked out.
