When was the invention of the plimsoll line?

The plimsoll line was invented in 1876 by Samuel Plimsoll, a British politician and social reformer. It is a mark on a ship's hull that indicates the maximum safe draft, or waterline, to which a ship may be loaded to ensure safety at sea.
