derived from the ancesters of the Norman Conquest in 1066 when the original name was something like Welle, meaning 'well' suggesting the family lived near a well. First found in Berkshire they are thought to be decendents of Baron Welles, the Duke of Somerset whose name is linked with the Norman Conquest. Subsequent family lines adopted the name Willis
