US gold dollar coins were minted from 1849 to 1889. They were smaller than dimes and were never very popular due to their size.

The new Sacajawea and Presidential "golden" dollars introduced in 2000 and 2007 respectively are only gold COLOR, not real gold. They're made of manganese brass. Even though some people mistakenly believe the coins contain gold, the metal is far too expensive and volatile in price to use in circulating coins today.
