Why did Albany's location make a better choice for the state capital than New York City?

Albany was chosen as the capital of New York instead of New York City because its location was more practical and balanced for the entire state. Being along the Hudson River, Albany was an important trade and travel hub, making it easier for people from both the northern and western parts of the state to reach. It offered a more central position compared to New York City, which is located far to the south. Politically, it also prevented New York City from having too much influence, since the city was already the state’s largest economic and population center. Albany already had the infrastructure and history of government activity, so it made sense to establish it as the permanent capital in 1797.
