I am not sure a newspaper is a "genre"-- usually, we apply that Word to movies (like some films are in the Horror genre, or the comedy genre, or the romance genre). But a newspaper can have a "niche" or a "target audience"-- the specific group of people it tries to reach. For example, the Wall Street Journal is a newspaper whose target audience is businessmen and businesswomen (or people who are interested in business). The Sporting News is a newspaper whose niche is sports fans. Many newspapers try to be mass-appeal publications, reaching out to anyone and everyone-- USA Today is a good example. But increasingly, newspapers are finding that focusing on a specific segment of the audience can get them more readers, whether in print or online.
