How did IBM get its name?

The company was originally named International Business Machines; "IBM" is simply its initials.

"IBM" figures indirectly in the iconic movie 2001 - A Space Odyssey. The central computer is named HAL, and if you shift each letter in its name one position to the right in the alphabet it becomes "IBM".
