From what ethnic backgrounds are the characters in Rip Van Winkle?

The characters in Rip Van Winkle are supposed to be Dutch, but they are also British colonists in America. This explains why, when Rip Van Winkle awakens, he says "long live King George!," and everyone becomes angry with him.
