Suicide Is a Leading Killer in America
According to the CDC, Leading Causes of Death for in Females United States, 2006 (the most recent year with completed statistics), the top ten are:
Heart disease
cancer
stroke
chronic lower respiratory disease
Alzheimer's disease
unintentional injuries
Diabetes
influenza and pneumonia
kidney disease
septicemia.
The statistics for the general population (male and female) are pretty much the same. Suicide is number 11 on that list.
