It is very important the you precisely follow the directions in the owner's guide for the particular ski you are using. You can overheat the engine, melt parts of the exhaust system, damage driveline components, or worse.
For most jet skis, they can be run for 30 seconds or so without any special requirements. To run for longer, you generally have to connect them to a running water hose to provide engine and exhaust cooling. Exercise caution however. Running too long (more than five minutes or so) even with running water can damage driveline components. And not turning the water on and off at the right time can cause the engine to overheat or flood with water.
