Ferdinand Magellan sailed with a diverse crew of about 270 men from various nationalities, including Spaniards, Italians, Portuguese, and others. His expedition, which set out in 1519, was commissioned by the Spanish Crown to find a westward route to the Spice Islands in East Asia. Notably, he commanded the fleet of five ships, including the flagship, Trinidad. The journey ultimately led to the first circumnavigation of the Earth, despite Magellan not surviving to complete it.
