Horses lived in Death Valley primarily during the late 19th century, particularly during the Gold Rush era when prospectors and miners used them for transportation and hauling supplies. The harsh conditions of the desert, however, made it challenging for horses to survive long-term. Today, wild horses, descendants of those used by settlers, can occasionally be spotted in the surrounding areas, but they are not native to the region.
