What was used before bar code scanner was invented?

Prior to the use of a bar-code scanner, it was quite common for prices to be printed on little stickers which were then stuck onto products. Aside from that, cashiers can have their own price lists, and can just key in the price of a product even if there is nothing on the product which says what the price is or which allows for computerized pricing.
