Dollar General was founded by James Luther Turner and his son, Cal Turner Sr. The first store opened in 1939 in Springfield, Kentucky, originally under the name J.L. Turner and Son. The company was rebranded as Dollar General in 1955, focusing on offering a wide variety of products at low prices. Today, it has grown into one of the largest discount retailers in the United States.
