He wanted a divorce with Catherine of Aragon, a Spanish princess because she was not pregnant for some years and there were five other children that were still born or died as infants. Catherine was once the wife of Henry's brother, who was now dead and even though The Bible stated that a man should never marry his brother's widow, the Pope agreed to go ahead with the marriage.
Henry needed an heir to the throne after he died, however Catherine didn't deliver a boy. Henry thought that God was punishing him for marrying Catherine. Henry fell madly in love with Anne Boleyn, a lady at his court. The Pope did not agree to have Henry divorced.
I hope that helped!
