Why was Yahweh's name taken out of the bible?

One quote might help answer this question. It can be found in the preface of the American Standard Version of The Bible where it speaks about "...a Jewish superstition, which regarded the Divine Name as too sacred to be uttered..."

Following this tradition, many translators replaced the name (YHWH)with the titles LORD or GOD (often printed in CAPITOL LETTERS).
