How do you explain why slaves were needed on the Americas?

The most common crop in the old South was cotton. Picking and cleaning cotton is a very labor-intensive job, that took a LOT of people to do. Hiring people to do that work would have been ruinously expensive. "Free" labor looked pretty appealing from that perspective. The invention of the "cotton gin" to automate the process was the first step in the abolition of slavery.
