Stalagmites form in caves when mineral-rich water drips from the ceiling and deposits minerals, primarily calcium carbonate, onto the cave floor. As each droplet falls, it leaves behind a small amount of mineral, gradually building up over time. This process is similar to stalactite formation, which occurs from the same dripping water that hangs from the cave ceiling. Together, stalactites and stalagmites grow towards each other, often meeting to form a column.
