A:

Throughout history, religions have almost always resisted any form of democracy or even devolution of secular powers away from the sovereign. This has been a symbiotic relationship, with the Church supporting and assisting kings and emperors, and those sovereigns supporting and assisting the Church in turn. During the age of colonisation, the Church soon recognised the opportunity afforded to the Church and its missionaries by the creation of European empires in the New World.
