He was in parliament for nearly four decades from 1584 to 1617 and was knighted by James 1. In 1607 became solicitor general and 6 years later attorney general. In 1616 he joined The Privy Council. He became a Viscount in 1621, but that same year he was accused of accepting bribes and impeached for corruption. He was tried and found guilty and sentenced to the Tower of London, but after 4 days he was released.
