Father's Day was declared a national holiday in the United States by President Richard Nixon in 1972. The idea for a day to honor fathers was initially proposed by Sonora Smart Dodd in the early 20th century, inspired by Mother's Day. The first official celebration took place in Spokane, Washington, in 1910. Since then, it has been recognized annually on the third Sunday in June.
