Is driver's ed necessary to get your learner's permit in Texas?

No. You only need a learning permit if you want to drive with a licenced driver to learn the rules of the road. If you think you know them and want to skip that part you can go steight to the test. Mind you it would be a good idea to drive with someone for awile before you go for your road test. The testers aren't very forgiving for all the little things that most drivers do every day.
