Why cant they put a single huge parachute on commercial airplanes so they can land safely in case of emergency?

It's actually possible, just impractical, since a chute large enough to slow an airliner would need tremendous storage space. Also airliner accidents rarely involve a plane just falling from the sky from a parachute-worthy altitude, barring in-flight explosions or engines getting choked on a flock of reindeer.
