When the elderly overeat the heart works harder, gaining weight adds problems to the legs and feet, breathing becomes more difficult and other organs of the body are under more stress. Too much fat in the diet from fatty meats, deserts, and foods with high carbohydrates, puts extra strain on the heart. To counterbalance this, the elderly should eat leaner meats--add fresh fruits and vegetables, get daily exercise--walking is best--and do things that make them feel good about themselves and others.
