What happened to yone in the samurai's Tale?

In "A Samurai's Tale" by Erik Christian Haugaard, Yone is a young boy who is taken in by the samurai, Taro, after his village is destroyed by bandits. Throughout the story, Yone learns the ways of the samurai and eventually becomes Taro's apprentice.
