How did St. Barbara become a saint?

St. Barbara of Nicomedia is a legendary saint who may have never existed. If she was indeed a real person it is reported that she was martyred for her faith by being decapitated by her own father for refusing to abandon her Christian faith. She was never canonized. Barbara of Nicomedia is no longer listed on the Calendar of Saints as of 1969 and her cult has been suppressed. There were undoubtedly beautiful converts named Barbara, this saint is legend, and her cultus developed when pious fiction was mistaken for history.
