The first people to occupy Tunisia were the Berbers, an indigenous group who have inhabited North Africa for thousands of years. They were later joined by Phoenician settlers from present-day Lebanon, who established the city of Carthage around the 9th century BCE. This blend of Berber and Phoenician cultures laid the foundation for the region's subsequent history. Over time, Tunisia also saw influences from various civilizations, including the Romans and Arabs.
