For what purpose is a smoke curtain used?

A smoke curtain is designed to contain smoke within a specified boundary when a fire breaks out as smoke kills as many people as the actual fire does. This also allows the part of the building/vessel outwith the smoke boundary that has been activated to evacuate safely if the smoke/fire is contained and also pinpoints the location for the local fire authority to investigate, extinguish the fire or find any personnel within this area
