How much of America is rural?

As of the 2020 Census, approximately 19.3% of the U.S. population resides in rural areas. This equates to around 60 million people, with rural regions defined as areas outside of urbanized clusters. The rural landscape includes a diverse range of communities, from small towns to vast agricultural lands. Overall, while rural America constitutes a significant portion of the land area, its population share has been steadily declining as urban areas grow.
