They go to remote sites in various places and dig up what is in the ground. They have to be very careful and not damage ancient artifacts. To work a site they make a grid and number it. If something is found they take a photo of it still in it's location, they number the item, and log it into a logbook. The location of an item can be as important as the item it's self. Then, they make sure the item is preserved correctly because in some cases exposure to air can make an item fall apart. The archaeologists also has to know the culture and history of an area so he can know where to look and the age or significance of artifacts. Many specialize in a particular area, culture, history, society . There are also underwater archaeologists so they also have to know how to dive. They do much the same thing that is done on land with grids and dating items. Many times their preservation requires them to keep items found in water so they won't decompose when they hit the air. Archaeologists also work in museums and preservation of historical sites. They also teach at universities when not working on a site. Sometimes they do experiments to try to figure out how something was done and copy a building like a pyramid that is all ready made to figure out how it was done or test a theory.
