Reconstruction was not successful due to a combination of political, economic, and social challenges. The withdrawal of federal troops in 1877 allowed Southern states to enact Jim Crow laws, effectively disenfranchising and oppressing African Americans. Additionally, the lack of a cohesive strategy for integrating freed slaves into society and the economy left many without support. The resurgence of white supremacist groups further undermined progress toward racial equality, leading to a legacy of segregation and systemic racism.
