In 1860, Abraham Lincoln was elected President of the United States, and South Carolina seceded from the Union. In 1863, New York City experienced draft riots, and the Battle of Gettysburg took place. In 1865, President Lincoln was assassinated, and in 1868, the Fourteenth Amendment was ratified. On February 3, 1870, the 15th Amendment to the Constitution was ratified.
