The policy of appeasement was a contributing factor to the outbreak of World War II because it was used against an opponent(Hitler) whose immediate goals included domination of Europe. Any act of appeasement stood little chance of satisfying him . He would always want more. As a matter of fact certain acts of appeasement did infuriate him such as when it delayed his acquiring Czechoslovakia. Once France and England came to the realization that Hitler could not be negotiated with they drew the line in the sand (guaranteeing Poland's sovereignty) that kicked of WWII. Most likely if they had acted decisively 2-3 years earlier they could have stopped Hitler without the risk of a long and costly war. Appeasment, a method used by Neville Chamberlain to make Hitler happy did not exactally cause the war. Hitler probably would have attacked Czechoslavakia if Chamberlain had not used a policy of appeasment. However, if Chamberlain had not the war would have been a lot shorter as Britain and France could have easily crused Hitler at the time. It was their inactiveity in face of battle that made WWII extremely difficult to win. Hi Sarah How could appeasement ever cause a war? Lets say ten states live together on a continent and everyone is appeasing eachother. How do you see a war there? Faith in military solutions to differences in opinion, belief that might is right, blind patriotism and aggressive foreign policies caused the war. Appeasement failed to prevent Britian from becoming engulfed in the war. Cheerio Tommy I don't think "cause" is the right Word. World War II was caused by German aggression. But the policy of appeasement certainly did help bring the war about. If France and Britain had stood up to Germany when when Hitler did not have the strength to back up his threats, they might have forced him to back down without a fight or defeated Germany in a much shorter, less destructive war. Instead they kept giving him what he wanted, hoping to appease him, and Germany got stronger and stronger until defeating her required a fantastic war. Michael Montagne The policy of appeasement was not necessarily the primary reason for WWII. Although, appeasement was a major contributing factor. Great Britain and France both implemented the policy of appeasement toward Nazi Germany because Europe was afraid of war at this moment. Europe had experienced WWI and the Depression. Appeasement worked because it temporarily averted war during hostile tensions. Another Words it kept Hitler happy. Appeasement gave Hitler an apparently effortless triumphal march through the 1930s; it emboldened him and clouded his jugdement, but it didn't cause WW2.
