the constitution gives congress the power to set its own pay and also provide other compensations for its members. Today, senators and representatives receive $136, 672 a year. Each member also receives a number of "fringe benefits". For example, each member is allowed a tax deduciton to help keep up two residences, one in his or her home district and another in washington. Travel allowances cover the cost of several round trips between the home state and the capital each year. Members pay only small amounts for life and health insurance and for outpatient care.
