How was ice cream introduced to the White House?

Ice cream has been eaten for hundreds of years ( the Romans ate ice cream) and it was very popular in the 1700's. It is reported that it was Washington's favorite desert and he had 3 ice cream freezers at Mt. Vernon. Since Adams was the first President to live in the White House I imagine it was served at some point while he was in office.
